Iowa, Chicago & Eastern Railroad (IC&E) Statement Regarding Guttenberg Area Derailment

Sioux Falls, SD – Four Iowa, Chicago & Eastern Railroad locomotives derailed near Guttenburg, Iowa early this morning. Two employees were taken an area hospital with minor injuries for evaluation. The cause of the derailment is under investigation. Early reports indicate that a large boulder and embankment slide occurred in the area of the derailment. The rail line in that area is in between the Mississippi River to the east and steep bluffs to the west. It is suspected that heavy rain saturations weakened the bluff embankment causing the slide.
